How leasing works

A serious partnership with a horse.

As riders progress and want to fine tune their skills, or hope to step into showing, a half lease or full lease is a great way to experience building a relationship with a horse. At the same time, riders experience some of the benefits of horse ownership without having to jump all the way in. Leases are available when an appropriate horse for the rider is available.

We offer partial or full leases of horses that are appropriate and available. We do not have many horses in our lease program, so if this sounds like a great option for you, speak to your instructor sooner rather than later.

All leased horses must remain under the care of Rushton Stables throughout the lease and are to be ridden under the guidance of a Rushton Stables instructor. Speak with your instructor or review the contracts below to learn more about the available options and each party's responsibilities.

Leases are based on one-year terms. When you lease a horse from us, whether through a partial or full lease, you remove that horse from our completely available roster of lesson horses, and we need to plan those transitions.

Leased horses are also in training. On days when you are not riding or driving your leased horse in a lesson, it is being trained specifically for you. The horse is worked with the rider in mind, and its training is tailored to that rider's needs, strengths, and weaknesses. When you take your lessons, your horse has been prepared to be its best for you. The difference in response and accuracy between a horse in training and a horse only used for lessons is significant, and the former makes rider advancement faster and easier.

We do not lease horses only during show months. Riding horses is not like playing hockey. When not in use, a horse cannot be put in the back of a closet until you want to show again. That horse still needs feed, farrier care, veterinary work, a clean stall, and consistent daily care. Expecting someone else to cover those responsibilities until a rider wants to show is unrealistic.

If you want to be sure you can show your favorite horse, you can lease it for the year and learn on it the whole time. Progress is made and championships are won in the off season, and you will be well prepared when the shows come up.
